^^\/\/\/\/^^ <><><><><> There is splash of brightly colored trees
Along the path to your house Last week white clouds were scattered Across the cold blue sky As I avoided the muddy splotches Left by night's passing rains I waited until the sunset light
Stretched long over afternoon But you did not return
Leaving me to wonder What might be so important To keep you from me Lisa Jain Thompson c. 2006 ![]() __/\/\/\/\__

^^\/\/\/\/^^ bits and pieces of the past
Slipping Out
When I was a young girl,
A child of five or six, no more,
I would dream the world was right
And I, the beautiful young woman Destined for greatness and marriage
To some heroic knightly prophet
Who would save the earth From the perils of war and nature.
I would be his helpmate,
His wife, his lover,
The mother of his children,
The woman walking along the shoreline,
My voice strong under the sunlight
As I sang of lost futures And love gone wrong.
I would visit moon and planets By his side with son and daughter,
Together we would show the world
The path to the stars.
Then I would wake to morning's cold breath,
Hobbled by polio and other dark jests
That trapped me in space and body
To the world set up around me
Until I learned the skills I needed to survive, Poet, woman, wife and lover until I die.

^^\/\/\/\/^^ more leaks
If
If not for World War Two,
I would be ten years older
And someone else; If not for polio,
I would not limp;
If not for asthma
And other childhood disease, I would not have had So much time to read; If not for my parents,
Their parents and grandparents
And the shifting focii of time and space,
I would not have this brain And poet's soul; And if not for transsexuality,
I would not be.
So what chance did I have
But dare?

^^\/\/\/\/^^ "Peace" is a condition
In which no civilian pays any attention To military casualties Which do not achieve page-one, Lead story prominence
-- Unless that civilian
Is a close relative
Of one of the casualties.

^^\/\/\/\/^^ the crow made me do it
The Crow
Fat crow walking
In the middle of the road,
Dead doe on the side,
Legs askew, neck broken;
Morning clouds scattering
As autumn sun rises And a flight of geese splits,
Reforms, continuing south.

^^\/\/\/\/^^ an aftermath of class
Aftermath
I seem to be kissable,
To use the polite term,
So I guess I should be upset To be viewed that way -- At least that's What the manual says.
But I work too hard
To look this good
To be disturbed By a man's hungry gaze;
And the looks of older dykes
Aren't any big
Intellectual exercise
-- The buzz is the same,
Theirs and mine:
Sex is good,
Let's do it.

^^\/\/\/\/^^ EEK!
Physicists and medical researchers for the first time have demonstrated a new technique that non-invasively measures in real time the level of damage to the skin from sun exposure and aging, and initial results suggest that women’s skin ages faster than men’s.
The new laser-based technique images the fabric of the deeper layers of the skin, combining methods for imaging collagen and elastin, whose degeneration causes the appearance of wrinkles and the progressive loss of skin smoothness. The technique measures relative amounts of collagen and elastin by a single factor, which can be positive or negative, like temperatures.

^^\/\/\/\/^^ the common thread
Crockett and All That
Three a day, three a day,
Americans dying,
The fool will keep going
Until dozens more are dying. Santa Anna killed all the ancient Texicans,
But Texas remembers victory
With pride and glory;
The damn fool would kill
All our brave young Americans
Rather than admit He might be mistaken.

^^\/\/\/\/^^ back and forward
The Decision
Would I have volunteered,
All else being equal?
Depends on the war
-- I know it when I see it --
And whether the Commander
Is a President I can trust.
The conscience involved is mine,
The soul to be damned mine also,
And all the fine words
And all the King's men
Cannot make right an unjust war. I would die against Hitler,
Put down Confederate insurrection,
Chase to his death Bin Laden,
And refuse Nam and Iraqi Freedom.
The sin is mine,
As is the time served: I would die for Freedom, But not lay down one life For Bush or Nixon
To help them sleep at night. Lisa Jain Thompson

^^\/\/\/\/^^ To permit irresponsible authority
Is to sow disaster; To hold a man responsible
For anything he does not control
Is to behave with blind idiocy.

^^\/\/\/\/^^ on any sunday
Pomegranate
Pomegranate and oolong
Steaming in the tea cup While my nose insists
On dribbling blood Between the sneezes.
Such a lovely way
To spend a Sunday afternoon
While acorn squash bakes
Languidly in the oven And dinner slowly approaches. A candle of some fragrant scent
Burns on the coffee table,
It's light lost against winter sun
Reddened through the window. A sip of hot fruit and green leaves,
Steam heating inner passages;
Warm contentment, drowsy body,
As time passes watching British mysteries.
